My family had about 400 acres in East Texas, at one point. My great grandfather or his dad, had the idea to purchase a bunch of and in a rural area that nobody really visits to this day! Over time parts of the land was sold, and we currently have about 150-175 acres still. People have tried, for decades left and right to get that land from us, not to mention its sitting on oil and a small lake. The last offer I can remember a random businessman offering was what basically broke down to less than $100/acre. Let’s be honest. The US has enough unused and undeveloped land to give every African American 40 acres and a mule. Although most of this land is mid west, we have enough renewable technology to create sustainable communities. Black people can choose to develop the land or sell it. It would not cost the white tax payer a cent. Unfortunately, if we keep asking this from a system that oppresses us, we will never achieve progress. We need to stand up and demand recompense.

I hope that train is stopped from developing. My family got land in Oklahoma land run and let it run down before I was born. I remember my uncle talking about how great it used to be. They’ll need farms and the resources to process what they grow …unless they just want to sell their raw produce wholesale ..otherwise, you also need resources to clean, cann or freeze your produce to preserve it and maximize your profits..so I would consider a farm, and some type of shop/kitchen to cann your produce or clean it and package it to be frozen… labeling to promote your family farm… Or labeling so grocers can sell it under their own label…. reparations started off as a DC thing for freed slaves in the District of Columbia. Before the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. On April 16, 1862, Lincoln signed a reparations bill called the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act. that would give freed slaves up to $100 but they would have to sign an agreement to relocate to a province outside of the United States.
This a great story, but I think it misses a few things. The biggest threat land being restored to small parcels, is suburban sprawl and or industrial agriculture. The story neglects the fact that If small parcels of land are returned to individual ownership of people of any color, they will almost certainly be leased to large industrial operators or eventually sold into development. The government should encourage small local food economies and healthy eating, and then land ownership equality will be a natural by product.

Update: 8/18/21 6:02 PM; 5/26/21, I found out 16 years ago that there were many unofficial adoptions from the beginning of time up until the 1940s for the United States and still continuing all over the world where there were no paperwork, no attorney nor court, nothing legal. Back then heads of households took in strangers when they didn’t have nobody to stay with; and the census records aren’t correct as to the ‘role’ of the infant, baby, toddler and small child to the head of households, in many cases if the infant, baby, toddler and small child isn’t no kin then they are mistreated badly, not talked to, nor cared about nor looked out for nor encouraged to do better or stay in school. how would they even find enough mules, since most of them had been used up or killed in the civil war? maybe some old and wounded mules? how would they find enough farmland, since 40 acres x millions of people, is maybe not even possible? i wonder if anyone even did the math before they passed that legislation. let’s see: 40x 100 slaves= 4000 acres.
