Paul Murdaugh, a 22-year-old University of South Carolina student, and his mother Maggie were found shot to death at their estate in Colleton. The tragic incident occurred nearly five years ago in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia. Paul was charged with drunkenly crashing a boat in an accident that left a 19-year-old friend dead. He attended Wade Hampton High School and received a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of South Carolina.

She had graduated Wade Hampton High School and was attending college and working at a clothing store.
Richard Alexander Murdaugh Jr., born April 11, 1996, graduated from Wade Hampton High School in 2018 and attended the University of South Carolina. He attended public schools in Hampton County and graduated from Wade Hampton High School in 1957.
The tragic incident has raised questions about the high school education of Paul Murdaugh and his family. The family’s history and the tragic events surrounding the murders have been a subject of ongoing investigation.

The Murdaughs had such a casual relationship with firearms. I am pro-2nd Amendment and think people should own guns (and I have no problem with hunting for sport, target shooting, etc), but you cannot ever lose respect for the danger that guns pose. In all of the testimony, I notice a repeated pattern demonstrating that the Murdaughs (Alex and Paul in particular) treated weapons with a casual apathy that is not at all befitting of responsible gun ownership. It is just another revealing trait in this family: treating everything in their life with a certain amount of disdain & contempt. They had their little collections of people and things—everything boiled down to the family name and materialism. And when Maggie and Paul (who were mere commodities to Alex) outlived their usefulness to him, he made use of another family commodity (his guns) to get rid of them. It’s horrifying.
This witness comes across as very believable and likable. This must be extremely difficult for him but he isn’t “hostile” with either side, isn’t trying to force any narrative, and is just telling the truth. Both sides got something out of him—with him saying he was sure Alex’s voice was on the article, while also saying Alex had a great relationship with Paul and Maggie.
I’m wanting to walk up and raise the mic and move it closer to him so he doesn’t have to bend forward each time to speak. I’m surprised that no one did this. Its hard to loose a friend to murder. I did. It happened 31 years ago this past Jan 14th My best friend, her husband and their 9 year old. Their murders are still unsolved. :-(.
Sounds like Paul sure loved to go out and kill animals all the time. I can’t imagine the personality to just want to go out all the time and kill things, but everyone seems to testify about him hunting all the time. What does that do to a person’s psyche after awhile? His father’s child, that’s for sure. Were young men around there ever encouraged to do actual good in the world around them? Nature, to them, is just supplying animals for them to pick off one by one. I don’t understand that kind of brain.
This just breaks my heart… My children have had a lot of the same friends their whole lives… They are family… this has got to be so hard for him… losing his friend in such a violent manner… sounded like when he said Miss Maggie his voice broke… What an honest and strong young man… Rest in peace, Maggie and Paul 💖🙏 😇 😇 💕
Looks like a lot of people don’t know the family too well. Alex may be the sociopath who was at the head of this family but he was not alone in the darkness that surrounds this family. The enabling and covering of questionable ethics and criminal behavior that went on in this family goes beyond Alex. Yes, Paul and Maggie did not deserve to be murdered but neither did their Housekeeper Gloria Satterfield, or Mallory Beach or Stephen Smith and if anyone still believes their deaths were “accidents”, then you need to learn a little more about this family and their extremely dark dynamics.
I’m so glad to learn that out of this horrible tragedy at least the dogs have been re-homed. Seeing those awful kennels broke my heart. No wonder Bubba was a handful. I’ve heard he now lives with Blanca. She seems like a kind, compassionate woman who loved Maggie. How fitting that Alex finds himself penned up like the dogs. RIP Maggie and Paul.
It’s really sad how this family was living it up enjoying all these luxury items and nice guns and beautiful cars meanwhile they were stealing money from victims that had lost loved ones from lawsuits and Mr Murdoch thought that it was ok to do this I find this so disturbing that if he gets away with this that’s going to send the real bad signal to this country and other corrupt counties that are doing this right now
He did a great job under extreme duress. He loved Paul and the family, and that’s obvious from the smile he could not hide when he saw the articles. I think it speaks to Paul’s favor that he had such a friend, regardless of his actions when drinking. It also shows that the Murdaughs were beyond inclusive when it came to their children’s friends, and that that love and effort they gave was not affected by the horrific situation that Alex had worked himself into with the drugs and the means he took to get them. This young man’s testimony has given me an insight into the family that I didn’t have before.
Watching his expressions during these testimonies, I always wonder if Alex was instructed by his counsel, to react a certain way, like fake crying with the birthday article. Narcissists & psychopaths are hollow & don’t have real emotions of sorrow, compass & empathy, so they have to “act.” They, do however react when it comes to THEMselves & especially their pride & money.
Grief and shock so terrible that you lose your ability to speak. Been there, done that. Unless you somehow became aware that such a thing can happen, it seems unlikely to me that he would have thought of doing this on his own. When I say I lost the ability to speak words, I mean it was GONE. Like I had never learned the physical part of communicating, making sound with my breath and vocal chords. As guilty as I think he is at times, other times I think that there is no way that hew would have done such a thing. perusal that article of them laughing together just a short time prior to the murders plus friends/sons testimony of the families relationships …. man, I just don’t know.
This is what Duncan Levin, Harvey Weinstein’s legal representative, has said about Murdaugh’s legal team of State Senator Dick Harpootlian and friend Jim Griffin making an appeal to the US Supreme Court: “It won’t make any difference.” “I don’t see any basis for an appeal. When he took the stand he erased any real chance of error as he said it in his own words,” “He will spend the rest of his life in prison – there’s no getting out of this at this point,”. “Not only has he been convicted of two heinous murders, but he has also implicated himself in financial crimes to give himself a lifetime in prison.” “He had to admit to committing other crimes in his testimony and that’s part of the problem with him testifying,” “At this time he’s already facing two life sentences.” “But then most people are not engaged in a lifetime of pervasive crime so it’s an unusual situation where he is not only facing double murders charges but also a slew of financial crimes lasting a lifetime,”. “So it is unusual to confess to other crimes on the stand but everything about this case is unusual.” “I thought it was a colossal mistake in this case for him to take the stand,”. “First off he had to acknowledge lying to investigators about his whereabouts on the night of the murders”. “He also had to acknowledge years upon years of deceit and lies to his clients from whom he stole hundreds of thousands of dollars. “He looked them in the eyes like he looked jurors in the eyes and lied to them to take their money… he had to look jurors in the eyes and say I lied to so many people so many occasions but this one time you should trust me that I’m telling the truth.
is that big blonde woman sitting on the same bench as Buster and his girlfriend Alex’s sister? I love seeing Will’s facial reactions when he is asked to view the articles he presented to this court. How he must have adored Paul. Does anyone think perhaps Alex got pissed at Paul for asking that they get a Hot tub for the new house that Paul and Will were buying? Did that house purchase get finalized for Will after Paul was killed? I could see Alex spin out in RAGE if Paul would ask him for something – especially that day when he had been fired, and was aware of how horribly financially ruined he was. Did Alex KILL Paul instead of explain all his nightmare news he was dealing with internally? Is that why he killed Maggie too? He just spun out in some kind of Red RAGE……madness……to hide his horror of a lifestyle he would now be providing them…… just a thought! And I also do not believe that they did not have Life Insurance Policies on Maggie and Paul. IFF Alex had a life insurance policy on his MAID/Nanny = surely he would have one on Maggie and Paul,…….under the Umbrella…..c’mon
My ancestors are all southern, and I’m glad I escaped to the north to raise my children where much fewer people kill for sport. If you have to kill for food I think that’s the way our corner of the Universe is designed. However, there’s something rather bloodthirsty about killing animals for your entertainment.
Wasn’t Paul’s phone said to have been on his backside, or in his back pocket? I think I remember from the first responding officer’s testimony while his body can footage was played they said something about his phone being in his back pocket or on the back of him, or something, or I just made that up in my head.
I know this is real life but I’m as intrigued as I would be with a new John Grisham book. I am a northern Yankee but was raised to speak respectively to peers and elders, something that is lost on today’s generations. We could all learn from how southern mannerisms make for a more civil society. Yes sir, no sir. Yes mam, no mam. Please teach your kids proper language and etiquette. If Alex didn’t do it, then the son of Sam did
I’m appalled by this whole family and pretty well all their friends. Hunting for food is one thing but these people would kill anything that moved! Shooting at ducks?!? So how many eagles, hawks and owls have died of lead poisoning through the years after eating the carcasses left behind by these kids on their killing spree I wonder. Sad.
Showing articles that they were happy doesn’t mean that much to me anymore, since seeing how happy Chris watts was in all the articles but in reality wasn’t n there was alot more footage of him playing the role of happy dad that were shown but yet he did what he did n that had money pressure in that case too . The article of him in the background and the article of him in different clothes he was in only a short while b4 the murders and the phone steps and the blue coat residue on the inside like it was turned inside out for some reason, somethings not right – phone call’s deleted, why hide stuff if you haven’t got anything to hide only makes you look suspicious if you didn’t do it, All the stuff leading up to the poor mother n son getting shot all look suspicious the fact he only got upset once the 911 answers is strange as well as it starts recording b4 they answer the call but u can only here the dogs, he also asked the officer if there still alive a few times but yet told them on the phone that he had took a closer look n there not breathing n it was really bad surely he would know his son definitely was dead as he had no head 😢 And he had already said he had tried turning Paul over n then new he was dead, There’s so much more evidence pointing towards him being involved or at least lying for some reason, maybe he dint act alone and maybe there doesn’t have to be 2 shooters to have 2 guns surly an experienced gunman can change weapons n change clothes. Then went to his mums for 20 mins to see his mother n later told the carer he was there for 45 mins, That could of bin a way of getting off the property to disposed of them weapons, That also explain why he nipped out n came back, Just my thoughts on everything so far,he obviously isn’t as nice person like people thought, robbing millions off victims that he was supposed to be defending 😮 this is going to take a long time to get through all the cases before, during n after.
Alex got away with a lot due to his gift of the gab. His undoing was technology. Cell phones, on star, towers, etc. The timeline one of the witnesses gave was extremely effective and damaging. Alex’s arrogance led him to believe he was invincible. Now he was sitting in the very courtroom he practiced in, only this time as a defendant. Mind boggling. Paw Paw and Mags got you Alex. They got you good.
Anyone, I don’t know much about trials. I’ve only watched this one and the Johnny Depp trial. Why do these prosecutors seem so less organized? Why are they always shuffling through papers as if they’re looking for something they’ve misplaced? They don’t seem as efficient? Or is this just the nature of the beast?
This guy, Will Loving, said when he received call about what had happened he got scared & left his apartment. If he thought, for whatever reason, someone could be after him also, wouldn’t it stand to reason someone was after Paul? Had Will & Paul done something that made Will think he was in danger also? To me this puts doubt in my mind that someone could have been out for Paul. Was Will involved in the boat accident? I do think Alex did it, but his lawyers are creating doubt. Why go into all that about the guns? Night scope? Where they spent Memorial Day? I think too much unnecessary information is not good for the jury, it can create reasonable doubt for something they didn’t even need to know. South Carolina does not allow the jury to take notes, how much information do they expect the jury to remember? What if the jury is focusing on what they don’t need to, opposed you what they need to? Too much information is just as bad as not enough. I feel like that witness could have through in 10 minutes. This is the first thing I have watched, maybe I missed the point of all these questions. If the jury like me, they are bored & loosing interest.
“Hunters, shooters,” killers and their weapon “toys” able to kill from a distance of 70-80 feet and aided by night vision rifles meant to destroy lives (innocent hogs, pigs, turkeys, etc. as well as humans). These “brave” unevolved and shallow degenerates have never learned/experienced respect or appreciation for life and are lacking in compassion. So when they turn their aggression against each other, they may indeed be doing society a favor. It’s the best we can hope for.
Omgoodness this prosecutor really sucks! He’s all over the place, asking questions that were answered preciously just absolutely unreal! Skips around like a broken record! Give it up! Only thing that hung Alex was that article and him lying! This prosecutor i think bored the jury into submission! For real
The defense seemed bumbling, and I don’t think ultimately Alex made a good choice to testify. If he’d remained silent and had a more skilled defense, he might have gotten off. Also, this family had entirely too many guns that they treated carelessly. If Alex had some moments of rage or drug-addled thinking, this may not have happened absent the easy presence of weapons. Tragic.
That’s the last birthday party they will all ever have. I just Dont see how he could be laughing with his son in the yard, Help his wife in the kennel and then blow them both away. There has to be more. So much more. They did say Maggie’s wedding ring was on the floor of her car. Now infidelity is a motive for murder. You Dont shoot your wife and favorite kid because you’ve been taking pills and stealing money. Everyone is so quick to just say oh he’s evil. There has to be so much more.
Alex totally has no lips so it’s hard to read them when he’s talking to his lawyer 🥴😅 I really hope someone caught it – I need to look THATTT up 😂🤣 Goodness I hope he doesn’t get off! Let’s hope the Victims get TRUE JUSTICE!! 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽 ** may I just add that the son Buster looks like a little jerk sitting there, looks just like his dad & call me crazy but I feel like he knows exactly what happened. Im sure Daddy told him!
After perusal this interview with Paul’s roommate it seems The roommate Will Loving didn’t really know the family! It seems as though Will Loving only knew how to have fun with the family and that isn’t a real true friend because in my opinion when you’re a true friend you love that friend whether it be for the good or the bad and it seems like Paul wasn’t able to open up to this friend about any problems, seems as though Paul didn’t have true friends only had friends because of the (Alex) father financing the fun times.
Is it possible that there was some sort of altercation between Paul and Maggie. Could he have shot Maggie and then been shot by Alex? Do they ever discuss how the tracks got on her leg? Any explanation for this or timeline as to when it happened? Was her ankle or leg broken because of it? Also, I may have missed it but beside her flat sandal prints in the shed near the tractor, was any other evidence found on the property about the atv running over her or other foot prints, etc etc?
Why would the prosecutor be so dramatic when questioning this witness about financials for Alec? He is a young man who is testifying to knowing about the boat case, being around the family, I Snapchat article, and after his friend’s death. It doesn’t make sense why he’s becoming so irate questioning him. This prosecutor is definitely not the cream of the crop and when this case is not guilty or a hung jury, It because of this prosecutor.
hearing young people describing how many guns were at the house. Them having learned to “kill” for fun at a very young age, shooting animals just for fun, that what makes me chill. As a non american this leaves me in awe and bewilderment. Then seeing the cross examination of the suspect, being chased just like they did with deers, hugs, peacocks, putting him in the corner all the time in front of all those people, incl. his own son. That was hard to watch. They did not get a real confession of him, so he was condemned of murder because he stole money and lied his head off. That was a very strange trial, to say the least. By the public and the media, he was condemned and found guilty even before the trial started. If he did it, maybe it was under the affect of him taking strong drugs and I was surprised that there had been no testimony of a medical person to explain the affect of this particular drug on a person! IMHO.
all these people are so prepped for testimony…I’m not a lawyer but I worked in PR and the process for preparing them is pretty darn similar. Ever since then it’s hard for me to ever feel like I can really trust spokespeople, politicians, people on the stand, etc etc etc. i would never want to serve on a jury.
If this is Paul’s friend that was going to go into hiding what’s the real reason why people were calling him to worn him to take off could he of thought that revenge was coming their way in the case of Steven smith ??? Why would they call him ? There’s a bigger picture going on here with him didn’t people catch on to that???
Why do they have the camera on Buster? He could tell it was on him I think. LoL. Is Buster still in school? Where does he live? I know he is his dad’s POA. Is he going to school to be a lawyer also? I haven’t heard them tell hardly anything on him expect when Alex was trying to leave him $10million on life insurance by suicide.
Did he do it or not? I admit the reasoning they are using for motive is crazy. Would a person DO that? And if so, definitely psychopathic thinking. But money is a huge motivator. Only Alex will really ever know. He’s already committed some big financial crimes for which he’s serving time. Could he be narcissistic enough to murder his own son and wife? Just…bizzare. 😳
To believed this man killed his son in such a manner is to be believed he is the devil . I’m not saying he did or didn’t killed his wife and flesh, what I’m trying to say is that people around Alex most be having a hard time understanding how can he possibly committed an act like this without previous signs. For us (in the outside ) is easier to believe he is a cold blooded killer because all is presented to us is from people who’s job is to make him look like a criminal . I also understand the defense’s job is to present Alex in a good light . However, we supposed to believed that Alex was this perfect manipulator equipped to steal and lie, but when it comes to murder his family he would easily set himself up to be caught.? again this case is so complex and if did kill his family this man is satan.
I’m rewatching this trial…I pick up new things every time. I swear Jim & Dick got schooled by every prosecution witness! I think Paul was a good person, with a side that when fueled by alcohol was A Timmy. He loved & checked in on his grandparents & aunt & uncle & by all accounts was a good friend. I blame a lot/most of his issues on Alex & Maggie..unlimited cash flow & unlimited flow of alcohol for someone with ADD/ADHD that wasn’t treated according to witness interviews. It’s sad that Gloria was the only one in the home he felt that loved him unconditionally. With the benefit of hindsight, he was intuitive & knowing all he did about Alex he was a huge liability to the entire family, civilly, criminally & financially. I find it interesting that none of these friends of Paul’s testified For Alex even though they said Alex & Maggie were very nice & kind to them & that Paul had a good relationship with Alex. These phone use questions by Jim to Nolan sounds like he’s never heard of speaker phone, headphones or earbuds Or stopping his work to talk on the phone. I’ll say it again…I can’t believe Jim & Dick are considered Top Guns in the legal world, That’s Mind Blowing. It’s Also Sad that all prosecution witnesses clearly believe Alex killed Maggie & Paul. I can’t imagine what all of his friends that have been heard from must be going through..Anthony, Conner, Miley, Morgan, Rogan, Nathan, Nolan, Will(s)etc All seem like such great people & stressed it was the alcohol that changed Paul but otherwise he was a top notch friend, generous & loyal.
❤ from Australia & this young man is devastated & suffering PTSD already. You can see it in his eyes & demeanour. It’s amazing they never interviewed anyone of Busters and Paul’s friends they had online mainly Xbox live playing call of duty etc. You hear a lot about a family when one talks plus back ground noises etc.
For paul to have supposedly been his bestie he is so shoet with his answers doesnt give much on responses like he doesnt want the killer brought to justice if that was MY bestfriend i would have more to my responses than just one word . They have to drag more info out of him…hes a waste of time …
This family’s irresponsible behavior with guns is just mind blowing. If nothing had ever happened to Maggie and Paul they were all playing with fire on a nonstop basis. Highly irresponsible. Definitely acting like ignorant, uneducated people who were clueless about the existence of liabilities that could easily and quickly occur. Just nuts.
He is very cold. Perfect assh— attitude that is great for a southern cop. As a matter of fact, Buster and Rogan were pretty cold and emotionless also. Very weird dynamic. It amazes me, these people all go to college only to return to back woods Hampton. The women go to college only to get married, have kids and be stay at home moms. Not a lot of intelligence going on.
4:04 36:55 Testimonies of Alex’s relationships with Maggie and Paul, and the good things other people say about them must both be the hardest part of this entire saga for Alex. He must be asking himself so many questions. I cannot imagine it. To have a family and lifestyle as they did and for it to just go poof.
Wow…what an impressive young man. The degree of stoicism he exhibits is incredible for his age, but you can tell by his overall expression and his sad/haunted eyes that he’s still struggling with this tragedy. He not only lost a dear friend & his “second mom,” he was a witness to the duplicity and psychopathy of a man he no doubt loved & respected.
I wonder what t felt like to Alex to hear how his son Paul was viewed by those who knew him, the high esteem in which he was held. I bet he had no idea. I think he saw Paul as pretty much not really going anywhere, as it was Buster he was cultivating. Ale couldn’t control Paul and I think he knew his son didn’t have much respect for him and that Paul knew what kind of person his dad really was and he had no use for duplicity and fakeness.
33:23 If the gun in the courtroom is the same gun Nathan used at Moselle, and he does seem to be sure of it, then it is also “the replacement gun” (because the original gun was never found.) He knew, and around the same time, that Paul had his 1st blackout presumably “stolen” ~ and Nathan used this gun shown in court ~ so how could he NOT know it was the replacement until this trial? The gun shown to him in court was the replacement gun. Jim is not very good at making this point and Nathan seems oblivious to it as well.
34:17 Jim: “And you’d even describe him as being careless…leaving guns around.” Nathan: “I’d say so.” That’s an understatement to be sure. To not miss a gun for several days after a party, and blame it on most likely happening at said party, is nuts. He didn’t lock his truck. Anybody could take the gun at any time. So, unless Paul never went out after that party for several days, he had no idea what happened to his gun~!! Alex testifying that he himself ‘had mentioned it to somebody in law enforcement’ “in case it came up in a future crime.” Alex did not officially report it and testified that there “was a possibility that it might show up again, being as how Paul careless.” Paul left himself open for real problems; not knowing for sure, but maybe even the one that got him killed. The thing I do not understand, is that the one shown in court had the scope on it, didn’t it? So if the “replacement gun” did NOT have the scope, then the prosecution’s lawyer was showing the original gun (the stolen one). There seems to be a LOT of contradictory evidence when it comes to the 350’s ~ the originals and the replacement. We heard testimony that the original Christmas 350’s (Paul’s & Buster’s were ‘camouflaged’). E.g. I remember hearing about the scope being bought, and I thought that too was for the replacement gun according to the guy who was with him when he purchased it. So, what gives there with Jim saying the replacement had no scope?
Look at the darn ” rifle ” what good comes from that type of device . It’s just a troubled macho man and son rifle toy . 😮 and they had 3 of them, basically 3 m 16 ‘ s . Then it comes out that they were such responsible people and gun owners …..that they Lose!, leave guns all over the place, leave unsecured handguns and long guns in their car . They forget guns all over, they fail to secure guns properly as required by law /ownership . Is anyone 😢surprised this crazy gun play happened ? Even if it was the act of a complete stranger …..😂😂😂😂
